Season’s Givings

February 24th, 2010

Professional poker players are not all about the money. They’re not selfish, egotistical narcissists despite what their table personas may be. In fact, the big winners are generally some of the most generous people you’ll ever meet.

In the spirit of the Holidays, professional online poker player Annie Duke, who finished 2nd in the Celebrity Apprentice, raising about 500,000 dollars for charity, has also started campaigning to raise more funds for a charity that donates to cancer research and patient care.

Phil Hellmuth, in the same spirit of giving, emceed four charity tournaments in November, raising over 250,000 dollars for children in need during the holiday season. Eat your heart out Operation Reach. I say that in jest, Operation Reach is a great organization that helps thousands in need every holiday season by providing much needed financial assistance so that the children of the families can get Christmas presents for the family.

And most recently, a week before the Christmas holiday, Hellmuth and a crew of about 40 other professionals attended a charity tournament in Phoenix that raised well over 500,000 for holdemforheroes.com, a group that supports families of officers killed in the line of duty.

I think it goes without saying, even though at the table the pros can be vicious, cocky, and every other derogatory term you can think of, off the felt, you’ll be hard pressed to find a harder working group of philanthropists. So respect people when you play poker online.
