Alfonse D’Amato

Former New York senator Al D’Amato was born on August 1, 1937 in Brooklyn. He served the senate from 1981 to 1999. Al D’Amato was chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs and also served as a member of the Senate Finance Committee. After graduating from Syracuse University College of Law, Al D’Amato began his political career as appointed Public Administrator of Nassau County.During his tenure at the senate, Al D’Amato was known as a “filibuster,” one who attempts to prolong a debate about a proposed bill in order to delay progress or prevent a vote. One of his well-known comical filibusters was when he read the entire phonebook of the District of Columbia. He sang “South of the Border (Down Mexico Way)” when he filibustered a bill that could have left 750 New Yorkers jobless.Al D’Amato was also known as Senator Pothole because he offered “constituent services” and helped citizens by dealing with them individually.He is also responsible for the recovery of funds of Holocaust survivors and their relatives.After the senate, Al D’Amato worked for George Magazine and Fox News. At present, he is the managing director of Computer Associates and Chairman of the Board of the nonprofit group Poker Players Alliance.
