As an online article author of some 7000 plus articles I have noticed an increasing issue with the number of categories on the top online article submission websites. Many of the top online article submission sites have lesser competitors who continually copy their categories and then fail because they cannot fill up the categories, yet we also see that the best of breed online article submission websites need to add more categories in order to support their authors and increase sub-topics and invite in more unique articles.

For instance I recommend that new categories be added to the mix, as well as new sub-categories as well. I would recommend please adding under the News and Society Section a sub category for Opinion Articles. Those articles which are clearly completely opinion in nature.

It could even be called; Pure Opinion or perhaps Op-Ed or maybe Commentary. As the top online article author I no doubt could fill that up with 500 articles in under 3-month period. Additionally, I have really noticed a growing interest in environmental issues and alternative energies, as well as recycling. All these should be listed.

A major category of Environmental could include sub-categories for Alternative Energies and Recycling. Consider if you will the incredible number of Solar, Wind, Hydro and Ethanol Articles, which would come in. It makes to move with the ebb and flow of society and their Interests and Internet Searches. Consider this in 2006.

The Hero’s Journey is THE template upon which most successful stories and screenplays are built upon. There are at least 188 stages to this journey. This article overviews the major archetypes and their challenges. As a sample, let’s use the Academy Award Winner Best Film 2004 - Million Dollar Baby.

Million Dollar Baby has two heroes, a hero (Clint Eastwood as Frankie Dunn) and a heroine (Hillary Swank, Maggie Fitzgerald).

Both the hero and heroine have inner, outer and romantic challenges.

Inner Challenge: Frank has to resolve issues with his daughter, represented by his interactions with the priest and Maggie has to somehow overcome her White Trash background.

Outer Challenge: Beyond the initial refusal, both heroes reach their apotheosis through the transition of Maggie into a professional fighter and her disablement thereafter.

Romantic Challenge: Embodied in the interaction between Frankie and Maggie.

The Supernatural Aid in this story is Morgan Freeman (playing Eddie Scrap-Iron Dupris). Like all good supernatural aids, he has his own challenge: what to do about Danger Barch?

Often there is also a Shape Shifter, with his or her own challenge. In this story it is Danger Barch, who appears at the end of the story and learns that, sometimes, it is OK to lose a fight. Crucially though, he switches from initially referring to Morgan Freeman as “nigger” to “Mr Scrap.” Unusually, this shape shifter has little to do with either hero or their challenges.

This article is intended to demonstrate the multiple challenges faced by the major archetypes in successful stories.

Why should I bother using humor in my public speaking? Can’t I just deliver my information and sit down? You sure can and that’s what most people do. The problem is that most people are not effective public speakers. They are nighty nite, snooze inducing, say your prayers, hit the sack, unlicensed hypnotists. They are ZZZZZs presenters. They might be experts in their field and be able to recite hours and hours of information on their topic, but is that effective?

According to Bob Orben, Special Assistant to President Gerald Ford and Former Director of the White House Speech writing Department, ‘Business executives and political leaders have embraced humor because humor works. Humor has gone from being an admirable part of a leader’s character to a mandatory one.’

A survey of top executives who earned more than $250,000 per year was conducted by a large executive search firm. The survey found that these executives believed their communication skills were the number one factor that carried them to the top. Mastering the use of humor and other high-explosion techniques puts a fine polish on your public speaking skills which can help propel you to the top of the speaking profession.

There are many benefits you can derive from using humor when speaking. Keep in mind that these benefits only help you reach your ultimate purpose for making the presentation. They are not purposes themselves unless, of course, you are only interested in entertaining.

Using Humor in Public Speaking helps you do the following:

* HELPS YOU CONNECT WITH THE AUDIENCE.

* MAKES YOU MORE LIKEABLE.

* AROUSES INTEREST.

* KEEPS ATTENTION.

* HELPS EMPHASIZE POINTS AND IDEAS.

* DISARMS HOSTILITY.

* OVERCOMES OVERLY FLATTERING INTRODUCTIONS.

* GETS YOUR POINT ACROSS WITHOUT CREATING HOSTILITY.

* HELPS RELATE FACTS AND FIGURES.

* MAKES A POSITIVE IMPRESSION.

* SHOWS THAT YOU DON’T TAKE YOURSELF TOO SERIOUSLY.

* HELPS PAINT PICTURES IN THE AUDIENCE’S MIND.

* MAKES INFORMATION MORE MEMORABLE.

* LIGHTENS UP HEAVY MATERIAL.

* YOU WILL BE ASKED BACK.

* YOUR SPEAKING WILL GET YOU HIGHER EVALUATIONS OR MORE SALES.

* YOU WILL MAKE MORE MONEY.

* YOU WILL MAKE PEOPLE HAPPY.

This is my favorite benefit. I get great satisfaction from knowing that I have brightened someone else’s life. I had an executive come up to me after one of my humor seminars and say, ‘You opened up a whole new world for me.’ I almost cried right on the spot. I’ll never forget it.

During a slow period of my writing career, I found myself only writing queries. With article assignments temporarily slumping I soon started losing the “edge” that kept my writing tight, sharp and crisp. As a new or practicing writer, it is important to establish and maintain good writing habits. Writers write, and “practice makes perfect” as they say. So thinking that “a little more writing exposure never hurt anyone”, I took the plunge and signed on to one of the internet’s largest article banks, also called article submission sites. It was a move that sparked my writing like never before in my writing career.

Article banks - What they are

Article banks (article submission sites) are websites which allow you to post focused articles on a number of topics. You get published on the web for free but you are not paid for the article. The catch is that the piece can be freely distributed everywhere to other websites, e-zines or read and used by anyone as long as they leave the entire article intact including your byline and bio. There are stringent writer guidelines at the better sites, format and content restrictions, but certainly nothing I found prohibitive in any way. Guidelines also vary somewhat from one site to another.

Crank up the volume

Write an article a day? Are you kidding? Yeah, that was my answer too when asked that question in one of the many writer-inspiration pieces I gobble up in my spare time. Even though writing an article a day seems daunting at first, you can work yourself up to that with some persistence and guidelines. How about putting out one or two articles per week? How many thousand-word pieces could you reasonably pump out in one month? Wouldn’t you like to know? Well, here’s your chance to find out. Use a simple “article template” or article outlines to help. If you’d like the templates I use, e-mail me and I’ll send them right out.

Practice slanting and re-slanting

Online marketing professionals need to write about the same topic over and over. How do they do it? They slant and re-slant the articles. Writing multiple articles in your areas of specialization (you DO have them, don’t you?) will give you needed practice in devising a variety of slants for your articles. Can you focus your article idea towards women, children, teens, men, seniors, businesses, students, an ethnic group or other target group? Practice in developing an “eye” for different slants will be invaluable for your querying and article marketing efforts.

Speed up and refine your research skills

If you are wringing articles out of your muse at record speed, you’ll need to hone those research skills to razor sharpness. Finding quotes quickly, using keywords to focus the reader’s attention and digging up an expert or two quickly will soon become second nature as regular practice fine tunes your skills. Skills you’ll need for those high-paying writing assignments to come. If you need to use keywords in your piece, you can make use of Google Ad words Keywords tool at: http://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordSandbox for a keyword search of high-ranking possibilities.

Looking for a poignant quote or two or more, try: http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art4753.asp

Another good site for quotes is: http://www.quotationreference.com/quotefinder.php

To track down some topic experts go to: http://www.ideamarketers.com or the exhaustive http://ezinearticles.com both of which allow expert authors to post.

For press releases page through: http://prweb.com . As you hum along you’ll surely develop other resources of your own.

Become a “household” name

Are you famous yet? Sue Grafton, Edna Buchanan, Tom Clancy and J.K. Rowlings may not need their names and brands marketed, but in all likelihood you might. An article posted to an article bank like ezine articles.com will probably be read by hundreds or even thousands of people in a relatively short time. I’ve had more than a thousand views of my articles in less than a month. It’s a fast, cheap, sure way to get your name and writing specialties out in front of myriads of people. Some sites have counters which allow you to track the number of times your article is viewed in real time. At the end of each of your articles there is a “resource box” or SIG where you are allowed to place your bio, e-mail and website, or even a short “promo” piece if you have a book or product to sell. Articles stay available online for months or years. Imagine how many times your piece might be read over time.

How and where to post

There are scores of good article submission sites online. A Google search under “free article submissions” will net you hundreds of viable sites. They are not all equal. The best article submission sites will have a high search engine and internet traffic ratings. They’ll also have an RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feed of articles posted there for maximum article syndication. Here are some of my favorites:

http://ezinearticles.com

http://www.goarticles.com

www.buzzle.com

www.articlealley.com

www.web-source.net

While I’m not a staunch advocate of “working for free”, I do recommend posting to article banks as a way of keeping the flow going and maintaining the habit of writing regularly. Pulling a piece together and having it published within a couple of days online for all the world to read, is extremely encouraging. It may be just the thing you need to lift you out of the doldrums and keep you going - and writing - during a slow period.

Finally, if you’d like to get a better idea of what typical postings are like, feel free to look at some of mine at:
http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Larry_M._Lynch

By the way, this article was conceptualized, outlined, researched, drafted, written refined and sent - all in one day. If I can do it, so can you.

Often, time is an enemy of writers. Sales seem slow and
checks too small. How does one make the most of their
effort? Here are some tips that will multiply your sales.

1. Companies accepting manuscripts from freelancers offer
copies of their writing guidelines and sample copies.
Assume there’s a reason for them. Study them. The Internet
will save you much postage and time from when I started.
Study their web sites as well. What do they tell you about
the publication’s readers?

2. Think ahead. Lead times for publication are rarely
short. Writers’ guidelines often teach Christmas is in
July. Lead times can be shorter for the Internet. Learn
what they are. Submit accordingly.

3. Take advantage of your research. Write more than one
manuscript for the same effort. This adds to your
productivity. Interviewing a camp director? Write a
feature article on how to select a camp for more than one
market. Write a filler article. Write an article on
finding work at a camp.

4. Resell the same manuscript multiple times. My record
for off-line publication with one manuscript is
seventeen reprints. It is easy to surpass this on the web.

5. Resell to editors. Once you sell to a company, send
another query or manuscript to its editor. Some companies
may buy from you for each issue, others will buy only once
every so many months. Learn what they want before you
submit. Learn this from studying their publication before
you query. If they like what you do, keep them happy.

6. Use query letters whenever possible. When an editor has
OK’d a query letter first you usually succeed at selling
the manuscript . This saves valuable time! Kill fees are
more often offered if article results from a query letter
as well.

Take a look at your sales. What has worked for you? How
can you multiply your sales? Brainstorm more ideas. Making more money per manuscript is possible.
