Health Injuries from Oral Contraceptives
December 2nd, 2009
Studies executed on healthy, premenopausal women in the Netherlands specified that Yaz, Yasmin, and Ocella (generic Yaz) suffered an raised risk of venous thrombosis as compared to non-users. The risks were increased as high as fivefold with oral contraceptives. These studies were published in August 2009. This was just the beginning of the contention surrounding Yaz, Yasmin, and Ocella and the consequent lawsuits to come regarding Yaz side effects.
It all began when women in their 20s and 30s were suddenly falling victim to stroke and blood clots after being put on Yasmin. Vibrant women who were on this brand of birth control for as little as a few months were exhibiting symptoms of major side effects and serious health risks. Cardiovascular injury, organ failure, and blood clots are just some of the serious Yasmin side effects allegedly experienced by women put on this oral contraceptive pill.
Females taking Yasmin, Yaz or Ocella to avoid getting pregnant or to treat PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder) or severe acne have reportedly suffered serious injury to their health and wellness. Although not all pharmaceuticals are one-hundred percent safe, the main issue surrounding Yaz seems to be that the original commercials downplayed the health risks and side effects. This attracted users to the product that may not have taken it otherwise had they been properly informed about the risks posed by Ocella, Yasmin and Yaz.
Feed the Children Benefits from Pistons Care Telethon
July 7th, 2009
Last March 11, the 2009 Pistons Care Telethon successfully raised funds of up to $450,000 in pledges in support of the Christian aid organization Feed The Children. All proceeds of the telethon went to Michigan homes that were in dire need of basic goods and food.
Feed The Children’s president and establisher, Larry Jones, said that he and the organization were thankful to the Pistons group people as well as to those who took part in the Pistons Care Telethon.
Jones went on to reveal that the current number of Michigan children suffering in poverty has stretched to almost one in four. Through the generous assistance of the Pistons telethon, Feed The Children was able to donate huge truckloads of goods to Michigan families and children in need.
The pledge total enabled Feed The Children’s contract carrier FTC Transportation Inc to perform 60 truck distributions statewide to aid associations like ChildHelp USA, Detroit Rescue Mission, Macomb Food Program, Mt. Olive Baptist Church, and Capuchin Soup Kitchen. Each trailer contained enough food and personal care items to supplement 400 families up to 12 days.
At the event, Detroit Pistons and Detroit Shock players and their coaches were also there to help out with the distributions.
Malignant pleural mesothelioma is a rare and fast acting tumor where no effective therapy is around in spite of the breakthrough of several possible molecular and genetic targets. The late stage of MPM diagnosis and the period of time that exists connects some exposures and diagnosis have made it tricky to completely study the importance of risk factors and the resulting molecular effects.
Many health centres are now seeing more patients that have asbestos cancer. Because of this, pathologists studying the case are given a number of problems, that are divided into those encountered in finding the differences between mesothelioma and harmless changes and those seen in differentiating malignant mesotheliomas from different sorts of e-cadherin and tissue tumors that connect. Immunohistochemistry is a major factor in diagnosis, however, it should be understood in regards to the experimental setting and radiological characteristics, and with an understanding of the broad morphological variations existing in mesothelioma.
Cancer of the mesothelium is a cancer directly affecting the serosal cavities, an anatomic location that is also frequently affected by metastasis, predominantly from primary carcinomas of the lung, breast, and ovary. Progression in IHC have lead to improvement in diagnostic sensitivity and mesothelioma in both cytological and histological material. Lately, the authors group applied a high level of throughput technology to the recognition of new flags that may aid in being able to tell the difference between mesothelioma from ovarian and peritoneal cancer, closely related histogenesis found in tumors and antigenic profile. Together with the improved tools obtainable for cancer of the serosa diagnosis, realizing the biology of cancer of the mesothelium has accumulate as of late.
What Are You Going to Do for World Water Day?
March 20th, 2009
For those that did not know, next Sunday is world water day so it makes sense to follow that theme. Let us hope that we are all already doing what we can to reduce our water consumption - whether it is using low flush toilets, taking showers rather than baths, turning off the sink tap between rinses when cleaning our shiny teeth, a water butt or two in the garden, etc - but what about reusing ‘grey’ water from around the house - water from that shower or bath, for example? Proper grey water systems, which recycle washing water to flush toilets, can be very expensive, in terms of both space and set up to fit but these can drop household water usage by approximately 30%. There are people who that showers instead of baths, take care with their soap use as well as saving the water to use on their gardens, or use the still pretty-clean water to pre-soak heavily soiled clothes. Some people even take dirty clothes into the shower with them, stomp and walk on them to get the excess dirt out before washing them as they do normally, this saves needing a second run through the machine! Can anyone think of other practical ways to reuse that water?
Dilemma on NATOs Purpose After Cold War
June 1st, 2008
The collapse of socialistic block by the late 1990s gave rise to doubts as to timeliness of the North Treaty Alliance Organization that in fact had accomplished its mission and essential role. Realistic logic concerning military alliances, based on historic experience of the Cold War, gave reasons to believe in incapability of either military block to outlast the collapse of the other.
American and European experts and politicians who shared these ideas, adhered to the opinion of necessity to disband NATO or at least limit this organization in its claims. For instance, Germany, represented by the Minister for Foreign Affairs Hans Ditrih Gensher and backed by the Czechoslovakia, pursued a policy towards “deeper institutionalization” of the CSCE, trying to transform this forum into decisive element of new European security system. Moscow in early 1990s gave rise to the idea of “European Security Council” which would consist of the largest European states.
Nevertheless, drastic measures taken by the USA and its closest allies not desiring to turn down time-proved mechanisms of transatlantic ties in late 80s-early 90s ensured NATO’s survival as defense alliance.
Except NATO-centric project, all other rival projects of European security architecture were rejected. Paris Summit demonstrated reluctance of many influential states to give preference to the CSCE in ensuring European security, while the concept of “All-European Security Council” failed to succeed due to its contradiction with processes of international relations democratization after the end of Cold War.
NATO’s central role and American influence on European security could have been put into question only by development of integration processes in foreign policy and security within the framework of the European Communities converted into the European Union. Notwithstanding intense economic cooperation with the USA, Western Europe, along with South-Eastern Asia, in 1990s and especially in early 2000s wasn’t very inspired by the prospect of unconditional support of the USA in carrying out their “global mission” which required huge resources and geographically broad interpretation of European countries.
The United Stated in their relying on closest European allies needed, on the one hand, to back up European initiatives in security sphere, and on the other hand, to guide its partners in necessary direction evading degradation of American-European political-military connection.
Understanding the directions of NATO reforming to maintain the organizations’ vital activity emerged in American political circles quick enough. Already in 1992 Colin Powell, then chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff, in his speech in London International Institute for Strategic Research mentioned NATO’s new peacemaking tasks and switch of the alliance to more definite actions on spreading democracy and political liberalism throughout Europe. Then, the task of the American administration included elaboration of strategy for carrying out the actions proclaimed along with reaching consensus on necessity of those actions among the concerned international subjects - American allies in NATO and Central Eastern Europe as well as American domestic political forces.
The next sections will reveal the evolution of the USA towards the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and include analysis of such issues as NATO enlargement to the East and shift of organization’s purposes, tasks and functions. The particular attention will be attached to the American policy evolution towards NATO’s purposes and functions as for now and place of this military alliance in the US foreign policy.
