Once they were only for the rich and were only fitted in the very high end cars but today SatNav systems are available to all. You can either opt for the in-car fitted systems that are still quite expensive or you can go for the handheld or protable units. This article is about the latter.

What is SatNav?

SatNav is a system that comprises of 2 elements, a GPS data receiver and a CPU/display unit. The receiver gets information from orbiting GPS navigational satellites and communicates it to the CPU/display unit. This unit is then able to find its exact location on the planet by comparing signals from various satellites.

The unit incorporates road maps of the area and places an indicator on the map showing where the car is on the maps.

Features

When you want to plan a journey you will need to enter the start and end destination, this can be done in a number of ways, the city, street and house number. The street intersections, the post codes and a location chosen on the on screen map. The start can be done in the same way with the addition of the present location as the starting point (remember the unit knows where you are). There are then itinerary or way points, these allow you to program destinations along the way. Finally you are usually presented with choices of routes with choices like, Fastest Route, Shortest Route, Scenic Route, Avoid Motorways etc some have the choice to avoid toll charges.

Fitting

The units can be fitted into the car in a number of ways but the 2 most popular ways are with a mounting bracket that has a strong suction cup that sticks to the windscreen. In a recent interview given to Business Cornwall magazine, Kevin Lavery, head of Cornwall Council, unveiled plans for a high-speed broadband network that is proposed to be made available across Cornwall County. If the 1 gigabyte-speed broadband project does materialize, it will transform the county into a leading business centre and a prominent and preferred business location in the UK.

Lavery said in this regard that the ambitious project is aimed at boosting the sagging economy in the county and that once completed, businesses in Cornwall will enjoy the fastest broadband speed in the UK. A fund set up for economic improvements in the county will provide financial assistance for the project. The South West Regional Development Agency (SWRDA) and southwestbusiness.co.uk also share the credit for assisting in the £100 million broadband proposal due to start in 2010.

Giving a status report, Mr Lavery confirmed that procurement processes for the project are being discussed at present, and private parties are being asked to apply for the tender. Worthy candidates will soon be short-listed and the winning bidder will be identified by year- end. Work will begin on the project after this and it is expected to be completed by 2013.

Ofcom recently published a news story on its website warning consumers about a recent fraud in which consumers are being cheated in the name of upgrade of their telephone lines. A group of impostors pose as representatives of Ofcom or BT, convince customers that their telephone lines need digital upgrade, and charge £6 for the same. Disconnection in the event of failure to pay the money is the weapon they use to convince consumers of their seriousness. Another tactic is to inform customers of temporary disconnection for testing purposes and ensure that the lines remain busy, so that the customer cannot make any outbound calls.

According to telecommunications watchdog Ofcom, any customer who receives a suspicious call should not reveal his personal or bank details. He should immediately inform the nuisance bureau of his service provider to trace the call. If the bureau is able to get any details, then either Consumer Direct or Ofcom should be informed about the same. Virgin Media will be launching PictureBox, a movie-on-demand TV subscription service, in collaboration with Universal Pictures. The service will be provided through the TV platform of Virgin Media.

The PictureBox service will be available to viewers at an additional cost of £5, which they will have to pay along with the regular Virgin Media subscription fee. The service will start from July and subscribers will have to choose their favourite films from among a collection of 28 films. New titles will be added every Friday and the icing on the cake will be the availability of some movies in HD quality.

The current subscriber base of Virgin Media, which is about 3.6 million, will be able to avail the facilities of PictureBox. The new customers who subscribe to the Virgin Media package of broadband, TV or phone or all three will have the option of adding the PictureBox charges in their monthly bills. Belinda Menendez, the president of NBC Universal International TV Distribution, while speaking on the latest tie up, said that this collaboration was going to accelerate the growth of PictureBox further as it would now be available to 3.6 million Virgin Media subscribers in the UK. According to the Stimulus Bill passed recently in the US, huge funds have been distributed to various parts of the economy, one of them being the mobile broadband industry. A grant of $7.2 billion was provided so that high speed internet connections could spread to rural areas as well. The mobile industry couldn’t have been happier at this move as it allows for infrastructure development without much capital expenditure from the companies themselves.

However, after the benefits comes the disappointment. With the government facing the problem of a massive budget deficit, President Barack Obama has decided to take back some money from the mobile industry in form of a spectrum license fee, which will be in addition to the fee that has already been paid to the government when the spectrum was auctioned. The spectrum auction in the US had taken place in the same way as in the UK. It is believed that the new license fee could play an important role in correcting the $1.7 trillion gap between the government’s income and spending. As the fee would be levied on an ongoing basis, it may not impact the companies at once, but would create a regular pressure on their profits.

The fee is being seen as critical for the government because of a scarcity of spectrum left available for auction in the near future. Further details about the proposal will be released in spring, along with the rest of the budget package.
